Swimming Upstream

What will she look like?

Who will she be?

I’m sure these are the typical questions going through every parent-to-be’s brain.

Will she be smart? Athletic?

What will her personality be like? Strong-minded? Introspective?

I guess we’ll have to just wait and let her tell us… And she most certainly will. But one thing is for sure: Camille and I will be raising our daughter with a singular focus on what (in our opinion) is the most important thing in life: health.

Optimal health begets an optimal experience in life. Therefore, what could possibly be more important? Throughout our experiences in the health arena, Camille and I know that, while well-intentioned, today’s modern medical system is grossly inadequate for chronic conditions. It’s also not very well-informed on current science. All you need to do is look around at the generic advice given out for cardiovascular health. It’s the same drum that’s been beaten for over 5 decades with no positive results: “Meat is bad! Eat your veggies and heart-healthy whole grains!” Meanwhile, diabesity is at a record high, and heart attacks and cancer are still the #1 and #2 killers of humans. Do we really need any more evidence to tell us to stop and rethink this strategy? I think not.

Strangely, the anti-meat, anti-fat dietary advice (also known as the Diet-Heart Myth) has also been debunked so many times that I find it grossly irresponsible and negligent to continue to propose it for any condition. Yet you still see it everywhere, proving that it takes good science more than half a century to actually take root in the medical community at large.

Well, that’s not how long it will take Camille and I to implement a heart-healthy, anti-carcinogenic dietary approach with our beautiful baby girl. Out of the womb, she’ll be consuming exactly what a baby needs – what mother nature has provided to us – the perfect infant formula: breast milk. After weaning, will we be feeding her Similac or any other highly-processed baby formula? I think not! She’ll be getting exactly what nature intended for her: a species-appropriate diet with high protein and high fat, and limited carbs.

This will essentially put her in the “strange” category with respect to her young peers. We’ll just have to cross that bridge when we get to it. However, I think we can safely assume that most of her peers will unfortunately fall victim to the obesity-inducing, nutrient-deficient, wildly excessive carbohydrate load of the standard American diet (a.k.a. SAD). Therefore, a good portion of her classmates will be overweight, non-athletic and perhaps quite sickly while our baby girl will be lean, beautiful, athletic and healthy. In other words, assuming we are successful in our approach, Lorena will have to get used to swimming upstream but she should stand out as the model of good health within a sea of childhood obesity.

It will certainly be difficult given the horrible school cafeteria fare these days, plus the exposure to truckloads of candy advertised at every turn, but this is a puzzle that I have every confidence we can figure out. (And, just so you know, we WON’T be the weird people that hand out apples for Halloween – unless they’re caramel apples… mmm…)

Happy Halloween everyone!
